Whether recycled paper, returnable bottles or espresso machines, baby monitors, wall paint or water-saving cisterns, low-emission upholstered furniture, monitors or solar technology - for more than 110 product groups the Blue Angel is a reliable purchasing consultant whose purpose is environmental protection and consumer protection. At 35, it is the oldest and most well known environmental label in Europe.

Who is behind it?

The Blue Angel is a modification of the United Nations Environmental Protection Emblem. The trademark owners is the German Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. The Federal Environment Agency prepares the procurement guidelines for new product groups and submits them to the Ecolabel jury for decision.

The Ecolabel jury is an independent and high-level body, which too name a few, Representatives of the Stiftung Warentest, the Verbraucherzentrale, the Zentralverband des Deutschen Handwerks, the Federation of German Industries, the DGB, and the TU Berlin. Represented are more accurate






So the Blue Angel is not just any eco-label. It is the outstanding eco-label par excellence.

What is it good for?

You would not need the Blue Angel if you could easily recognizable without it, if the paint is really low in pollutants, if the cistern is really water saving, if the lubricant really biodegrades quickly or if the chipboard is really low in emissions.

It is always the product properties, which are visually imperceptible to the buyer, that are used for dubious money making - to the detriment of the environment and consumers.

At the Blue Angel much more is being examined than required by law. The goal is for a catalytic converter to do what it promises and do it for the long term. So the testing laboratory first of all measures whether the legal requirements of the emission class, e.g. EURO5, from a catalytic converter randomly purchased in the market. In addition, however, additional, sometimes very demanding tests are required.

Blue Angel what else is being checked?

1. Aging test

The coating of the catalytic converter requires expensive rare metals. If not enough are used, then the catalytic converter effect decreases rapidly. Therefore Blue Angel catalytic converter have to pass a complex aging test. Three-way catalytic converter are artificially aged at 980 ° C using a hydrothermal process. After that, the exhaust emissions are measured again and must still meet the pollutant requirements.

2. Precious metal analysis

In a highly specialized and certified for the Blue Angel testing laboratory, it is determined whether the platinum, rhodium and palladium content with the manufacturer's specifications. This excludes the main source of fraud.

3. Component measurement

The manufacturer's information must match the sample. So there must be no deviation, e.g. the dimensions or the number of cells in the monolith, type of support used.

4. Structural design

Replacement catalytic converters often deviate from the design of the original for cost reasons. In LRT catalysts, this is usually done to improve a defective original.

However, if the production costs are reduced at the expense of proper functioning, then this often has dire consequences, e.g. Performance reduction, because the exhaust back pressure rises. Or the engine is running too lean or too fat because the lambda sensor does not measure all the cylinders. Or the catalytic converter is not working properly because the monolith is being flowed thru incorrectly.

5. Onboard diagnostic test

In the OBD system remembers the on-board computer of the vehicle when the catalytic converter is working incorrectly (since 01.01.2001 for gasoline mandatory). The catalytic converter sample must pass all prescribed OBD tests.

6. Hot Shake

The most important component of a catalytic converter, the monolith, must remain firmly and securely installed for years at an operating temperature of just under 1000 ° C in its surrounding metal jacket. 7. Environmental Impact

The preparation of a Blue Angel catalytic converter is expensive. For example,

  1. The testing for the first certification of the Blue Angel quickly exceed a six-figure amount
  2. The Blue Angel is reviewed annually. So every year costs for subsequent testing, so that the Blue Angel certification remains valid.
  3. There are annual fees for permission to use the Blue Angel certification.
  4. The material costs increase. For example, the environmentally friendly expansion mat used by the Blue Angel is almost three times more expensive than the currently marketed one. Or the coating: In order to meet the requirements of durability, more precious metals must be used in the coating and the so-called wash code with its expensive rare minerals must be of higher quality.
  5. High costs for new processes and machines: Examples: The vibration test requires improved processes for so-called canning, the canning of the ceramic monolith. For metal catalysts, the so-called metalithene must be made more durable by improved high temperature brazing.

Conventional catalytic converters - Lack of control is a major cause of manufacture fraud

The certifcation of a conventional replacement catalytic converter occurs after the successful testing of a sample part. After that the intial testing, it is not retested again. There is therefore no effective control or supervision of the lifespan of the certification.

Dubious manufacturers take advantage of this, and above all save the most expensive components, the precious metals platinum, rhodium and palladium. Without them, the catalyst is just a dummy. Typical examples are catalysts for 70 € on the Internet. But the purchase price of the necessary precious metals usually exceeds the selling price of these parts.

Blue Angel Catalytic Converters - Annual Control and Monitoring

Quite different with the Blue Angel: The Blue Angel program of a manufacturer is reviewed annually. For this, a test laboratory approved for the Blue Angel Certification, chooses a sample and buys the Blue Angel catalytic converter from any dealer, rather than from the manufacturer. Time, sample and source of supply are unknown to the manufacturer. Therefore there is no scope for manipulation at the Blue Angel.

AW:

Es sind große Anstrengungen nötig, und zwar von den Medien, vom Handel, von Werkstätten und von Herstellern. Wir vertrauen auch auf die Entschlossenheit der Deutschen Umwelthilfe und der Politik.

wo sehen sie denn die widerstände gegen den Blauen engel?

AW:

Der Markt ist seit Langem überschwemmt mit Billigkatalysatoren, die eine gültige Betriebserlaubnis nur vortäuschen und meist in übelster Qualität gefertigt sind. Ein Blauer-Engel-Kat ist demgegenüber ein hochwertiges Qualitätsprodukt und deshalb teurer. Er hat aber ein weitaus besseres Preis/Leistungs-Verhältnis, was man schon an der unglaublichen Garantieleistung erkennt. Dass Qualität die beste Art des Sparens ist merken die Leute erst, wenn sie sich mit Reklamationen herumplagen müssen.

was erwarten sie Von ihrer KonKurrenz?

AW:

Die meisten großen deutschen Anbieter produzieren nicht selbst. Die sind abhängig von Produzenten, die überall in Europa verkaufen. Die haben also nur begrenzten Ein uss auf ihr Lieferprogramm. Und das ist größtenteils alles andere als Blauer-Engel-tauglich. Die Konkurrenten müssen wahrscheinlich die Preise massiv senken um im Markt zu bleiben. Das wird den Markt weiter polarisieren.

waruM gehen sie gegen die Katalysator-BetrÜger nicht gerichtlich Vor?

AW:

Das könnten wir. Aber wir kämpfen um den Kunden, nicht um den Richter - und zwar durch hervorragende Produkte, faire Preise und eine engagierte Betreuung. Ich glaube, das haben wir in den letzen 15 Jahren auch rübergebracht. Die Kunden über den Tisch zu ziehen überlassen wir anderen. Ich glaube, dass man auch mit einer erstklassigen Leistung Geld verdienen kann.

welche rolle spielt der schutz der uMwelt?

AW:

Saubere Luft und gesunde Lungen sind ja gerade auch Ziele des Blauen Engel. Das bekommt man nicht zu Nulltarif und muss uns ein paar Euro wert sein. Mit dem Blauen Engel für Austauschkatalysatoren haben die Menschen jetzt erstmals eine Möglichkeit, sich bewusst dafür zu entscheiden. Die LRT setzt auf diesen Trend seit ihrer Gründung. Dr. Alfred Wenzel studied mathematics and computer science in Munich and Karlsruhe and received his doctorate there as part of his university career. In early 1984, he moved to SAP in Walldorf, where he remained until the year 2000. First, he drove the software development in the PPS and then worked in changing leadership positions. This includes the key account management of the most important national and international SAP customers, the founding and management of 12 SAP national companies, the support of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund and most recently the establishment and management of a globally active joint venture between SAP and Heidelberger Druckmaschinen for the media industry. Accompanying German industry interests were perceived in various international committees. For 15 years Dr. Wenzel operates as an independent entrepreneur. The focus was on various company foundations and participations in Germany and the USA. He has been managing his own company LRT Automotive GmbH for 10 years and gives lectures on the topics catalysts and diesel particulate filters.

If you purchase a catalytic converter that is only suitable for example, EURO3 or EURO4 is sold, then you have a good chance that EURO3 or EURO4 is not reachable, so you will get ripped off.
